Want to join Southern Air Transport Virtual Airline?
Prospective Pilot Info
Thank you for choosing Southern Air Transport Virtual. Before you
proceed to the actual application, take a few moments and read the
following information so you are familiar with our policies and
procedures.
GENERAL...
Southern Air Transport Virtual is dedicated to providing a fun and dynamic flight environment. Unlike most virtual airlines, we love to hear ideas for events and missions from our members and will do everything in our power to follow up on good ideas. All of our staff are members of VATSIM VSOA (vUSAF, vUSN, vUSMC etc) and are rated as instructor pilots in those organizations. The ability to instruct does not stay at the front door. The staff at Southern Air Transport Virtual prides itself on the ability to teach new pilots how to fly these birds in ways you never imagined!
REPAINTS AND MORE.....
Southern Air Transport has repaints available in company colors for the L-100-30, LC-130, CH-53, C-7, 707-320 and 747-200F. We are in the process of finding and repainting suitable freeware models in Southern Air Transport Virtual colors. Currently the DC-8, 747-200F, Bell 412 and a C-130 (for use as L-100 and LC-130) are available as freeware.
FSX We are working tirelessly to support FSX and currently have the 707 747-200 and DC-8 in company colors for FSX and work is being done on the Captain Sim L-100 and LC-130 and the Anatov 225 for FSX use.
One of the interesting things about flying for Southern Air Transport
is our custom scenery. Flying point A to point B for other airlines
rarely exposes the virtual aviator to anything more than a nice flight
environment and in most cases stock airports. At Southern Air Transport
our pilots are provided with scenery for special missions: Flying down
to South America to do an air drop? Our scenery design team will work
up some scenery for your assigned mission that will make it more
enjoyable. Obviously not every flight is going to be a "special
mission" type of flight so our scenery design team is working to
improve the stock FS9 flight environment by adding interesting things
near airports: Pilots may encounter house fires, car accidents or any
number of everyday events that happen in the real world.
AGE...
Southern Air Transport Virtual requires that our members be at least 16
years old. We reserve the right to request parental permission to join
if a prospective members if they are between the ages of 16 and 18.
FLIGHT REQUIREMENTS...
Southern Air Transport Virtual only requires three (3) flights a month
to remain on the active roster. We do, however, require that
pilots applying for membership have at least 50 verifiable hours on the
VATSIM network. All pilots are required to file a PIREP with-in
14 days of hire. Failure to do so may result in removal from the active
roster.
TRANSFER OF HOURS.....
Southern Air Transport Virtual will transfer hours from any
previous VA with a valid link to their roster that shows your name and
hours. Alternately an email from your previous CEO or HUB Captain
(verifiable names via the VA website) will suffice also.

is challenging but not unattainable and is designed to encourage pilots

Aircraft Categories
Pilots for Southern Air Transport Virtual follow an aircraft classification routine to determine what aircraft they are certified to fly. This is based primarily on flight hours. However, a pilot that shows promise can be advanced to a higher category in advance of his/her peers. Airline Administration takes each pilot into consideration and looks at the whole picture before advancement. Any pilot who joins and feels that they are qualified for a higher classification than awarded, may request a flight test. The categories listed below only reflect current airline inventory. As this is expected to grow, the categories will change accordingly.
FIXED WING CATEGORIES
Pilots may fly their CAT and anything below
| 0-50 Hours | CAT-1 | C-7 |
| 0-50 Hours | CAT-1 | L-100-30 |
| 25-50 Hours | CAT-1B | LC-130 |
| 50-100 HOURS | CAT-II | 707-320 |
| 100-150HOURS | CAT-III | 747-200F |
| 150+ HOURS | CAT-IV | Anatov 225 |
*CAT-1B is a special certification that requires a minimum of five landings per year on the glacier in Greenland
ROTARY WING CATEGORIES
Due to the challenges of flying rotary wing aircraft, the hours listed below are a guideline ONLY and promotion to a higher category is based on demonstrated ability not hours alone.
| 0-15 | TRAINER | Bell 206 |
| 15-40 | CAT-1 | Bell 412 |
| 40+ | CAT-II | CH-53/S-46 |
FLIGHT SCHEDULE and POSITIONING...
Due to the type of flying Southern Air Transport Virtual flies (chartered cargo) it is very difficult to make all of our flights follow a schedule. We offer pilots the freedom to fly pretty much anywhere at anytime with the ability to select a prescheduled flight and fly it. However, we do ask that you fly continuous flights: start where you left off - so if you are flying to Cairo from Boston and want to fly from New York to Alaska - we ask that you not just start back up at New York.
AIRCRAFT...
As mentioned on the home page we fly the following aircraft: L-100-30,
LC-130, C-7 Caribou, DC-8, 747-200F and CH-53. Currently we only
support FS9 but are working towards full FSX support. While most of our
aircraft are predominantly payware at this time, we are working on
finding suitable freeware models. The C-130 based aircraft are based on
the excellent Captain Sim C-130 and Expansion pack. With out a doubt
this is the finest C-130 model available. The C-7 and CH-53 are Alpha
Sim models.
Currently we have a C-130 (for use as a L-100 and LC-130), DC-8 and 747-200F and
Bell 412 available as freeware.
TYPES OF FLIGHTS.....
Southern Air Transport Virtual conducts long range heavy haul cargo
flights on the VATSIM network and therefore adheres to the regulations
set forth by that service. However, we are an atypical Virtual
Airline in that we are emulating a company that worked in some
interesting places doing interesting flights: cargo drops, personnel
transports etc. Southern Air Transport Virtual will emulate
these types of operations with-in the published regulations of VATSIM
and will work towards establishing a VSOA partnership with VATSIM as a
Paramilitary Organization so that we may conduct operations outside of
normal point A to point B flying.
USER CONDUCT...
We expect all of our members to respect everyone, their views, opinions
and comments whether it be here, our forum or in the Flight Simulation
Community in general. Anyone found being offensive or excessively
rude will be dealt with by the VA staff and, if the situation warrants,
may have their membership terminated.
HAVE SOME HIGH FLYING FUN...
First and foremost, while these rules look tough and may initially be
overwhelming, please remember that we are here for one reason: to have
fun.
